Amazon.com Review Get ready for big adventures with Thomas at Action Canyon, a Thomas and Friends TrackMaster set. Surprises await Thomas around every turn, with a giant waterfall, rickety old bridge, and winding mountain track. Inspired by the popular DVD, The Great Discovery, this set transports kids aged three and up to fabulous imaginary worlds.
Thomas is powered by a single AA battery. View larger. |
A waterfall and a collapsing bridge keep action canyon interesting. View larger. | | What We Think Fun Factor:
Durability: (what this means)
The Good: Exciting train set features popular characters
The Bad: Track only includes one train car
In a Nutshell: Action Canyon is ready to be invaded by imaginative kids | At a Glance Ages: 3 and up Requires: 1 AA battery | | | Laying the Tracks Before the fun begins, Thomas and his friends will have to wait for the railroad to be assembled. Detailed instructions with clear illustrations make building the track through Action Canyon an easy task. It does take a few minutes to sort out all the pieces and get a feeling for how their plastic connectors snap together. Once the bridge and the mountainous waterfall are in place, you need to place a single AA battery (not included) inside Thomas, so he can power uphill. A Dramatic, Dynamic World Be careful! One light tap on a secret button might cause the old rickety bridge to collapse right under Thomas. This colorful, sturdy track that runs through the unpredictable canyon is a great setting for imaginative play. Little engineers will love the switch that lets them pick whether Thomas busts through the waterfall or continues to the top of the mountain and on toward a daring descent. Kids who have seen The Great Discovery or ardent fans of the Thomas and Friends TV show will love that they can immediately start recreating adventures, like the discovery of a long lost town on the island of Sodor, but familiarity with these existing storylines isn't essential. Any imaginative child will be able to enjoy a day at Action Canyon. A Growing Circle of Friends If climbing up a steep pass and zipping through a narrow passageway isn't exciting enough, Action Canyon can be combined with other TrackMaster sets to create a humongous world for Thomas to explore. Adding exciting, new destinations, additional engines, railcars, and trucks to liven up the secluded canyon is sure to make this set way more fun for multiple kids to play with. The fact that Thomas only requires a single AA battery to run is convenient and economical, but he does labor a little bit on the steeper portions of track, which makes us wonder how he would fair pulling a heavy load. This seems a small concern compared with the potential of surrounding him and the Action Canyon with fun-loving friends and constantly evolving stories. What's in the Box 53 piece track set, Thomas engine, and instruction booklet.

Cute toy! October 12, 2008 TJS (at my computer in Omaha USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This toy is really cute! My kids (3 and 5) love it. My husband had no problems putting it together (besides the fact the kids were bugging him at the time)and it seems pretty durable to me. I did test it by half jiggling the bridge and the side came off but that was easy to put back. But it's not coming off with normal play. I love how the bridge drops down and the train comes through the waterfall. It would be cool to have real water but that would be very messy.
Much bigger than I expected and the price was same as Wal-Mart! It arrived in quick time too. Thanks again.. November 25, 2008 Patsy A. Stiles Vaughn (Fairfield Glade, Tennessee USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Very impressive track! It does need a lot of room, but keeps kids occupied for long periods of time. Really a good buy for Christmas and everyday. It also shipped FAST... At this point, it is the nicest of the Thomas collection. This will make you happy and especially your child!!!! psv
Better than I thought it was going to be! December 28, 2008 Barbara Shrum (San Diego, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My son is really into trains and Thomas and has a variety of "Take Along" (die cast), "wooden," "Lego" and "Trackmaster" Thomas toys. For some time he would set up tracks all over my house, up and over boxes, chairs and pillows to make a "roller coaster" (so he called it). So I got him the "Trackmaster Thomas at Action Canyon" for Christmas. My husband helped him set it up Christmas morning and my son played with it all day. I took it apart that evening and he, by himself, has put it back together and plays for long periods of time. I feel for what it is, it is durable and so are the Trackmaster trains. For the money, it is worth every penny (I got it for under $40) and Trackmaster is the best buy out of all the Thomas toy "lines." Take Along Thomas trains are very cute, sturdy and detailed, but the playsets (mines, mountains...) do not stay together and constantly fall apart during play. And of course are not motorized, nor are any wood or Lego trains. (Okay, yes there are several motorized wood and diecast trains, but they do not run very well or very long, and have problems pulling other trains). So far none of the Trackmaster trains have broke and run for a fair amount of time. Constructing "Action Canyon" is much like putting a puzzle together or playing a memory game, so I find it of educational value. My son is very active/hyper little kid and for him to stay focused and set up and play with such a toy is wonderful...And he no longer has the urge to setup "roller coasters" all over the house!! ;)
James' Christmas December 21, 2008 Linda Wisotzkey (Mechanicsville, Md.) My grandson loved the toy that we purchased from Amazon.com. I pretended to be Santa on the phone with him and he told me that this was the toy he wanted. The family came out for Thanksgiving and we had their Christmas then. Just to see the look on his face was enough for me. This year has been a tough one, for he lost a baby sister in Mar. My husband and I just wanted him to have something that he could enjoy and play with. May you all have a Happy Holiday. And always know that he is the reason for the season.
Thomas the tank Engine December 21, 2008 John K. Kelly My Grandson enjoyed this product immensely. I think he will enjoy it for quite some time. I will probably buy other assessories for this item.
