Amazon.com As in Munchkinland, people seem to come and go so quickly at the law firm of Crane, Poole & Schmidt. Out the door as Season Four begins are cast members Mark Valley, Julie Bowen, Rene Auberjonois, and Constance Zimmer (a tough loss). But the more things change the more they stay the same. Introduced to sweet, pretty and capable new lawyer Katie Lloyd (Tara Summers), it takes Alan Shore (James Spader) all of one second to come on to her. It takes Denny Crane (William Shatner) five. The most stellar addition to the firm is Night Court Emmy-winner John Larroquette as Carl Sack from the New York office. He has come not to shake things up so much as to tone them down, and "wring out some of the madness." "We are in the business of law," he pronounces. "A law firm has to be discreet, conservative." Good luck with that, Carl, especially when one of the lawyers keeps popping up on YouTube dressed as his female alter-ego, and the senior partner is one minute arrested for soliciting a prostitute, and the next caught in his own Larry Craig bathroom incident, and the next courting a discrimination suit after firing a female associate for being overweight. That, of course, would be addled loose cannon Denny Crane, who seems to be more of a distraction this season, but who rises to the occasion in an excellent episode in which he and Alan find themselves on opposite sides in the case of a Massachusetts town that wants to secede from the United States. "Every time someone counts me out of the game, I surprise them," he tells Carl. Boston Legal is nothing if not surprising, as witness the story arc involving a woman (former Saturday Night Live ensemble member Mary Gross) with Aspergers whose budding romance with Jerry Espenson (Christian Clemenson) is threatened by her romantic love for inanimate objects (the condition exists; look it up). Another new addition to the firm, Lorraine (Saffron Burrows), herself an object of Alan's obsession, reveals explosive secrets from her past. But more compelling is the dramatic case of a woman (guest star Mare Winningham) who efficiently plots the murder of her daughter's killer, but wants Alan to plead temporary insanity. Spader, a three-time Emmy-winner as Alan, is at his best when he is on his (and series creator David Kelley's) "soapbox" ("Don't you get tired going on and on like that?" Denny affectionately chides him). His verbal smackdown of the United States Supreme Court justices in the episode, "The Court Supreme," is one of the season's most memorable moments. Carl Sack may not succeed in making Crane, Pool & Schmidt "a normal law firm," but as one is heard to remark, "It's not everyday you encounter compelling characters, is it?" --Donald Liebenson

All Rise for the Honourable 4th Season June 18, 2008 L. Jones (UK) 30 out of 35 found this review helpful
In my opinion this is one of the best seasons of Boston Legal. I am really disappointed however that the fifth will apparently be it's last. Shatner continues to deliver a top notch character. One of the highlights of the season and in my opinion the best episode when Denny and Alan go before the Supreme Court, what an excellent episode!! I am really looking forward to season 5 and rewatching the whole season from the start.
Better Than I had Hoped September 26, 2008 David N. Knottnerus (Somewhere in Iraq) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was heading to Kuwait when this season started, so I only got to see the second episode before I left, and I was freaked out that Brad Chase was the A.D.A. now, Paul Lewiston was gone, and replaced by Carl Sack played by John Larroquette. So I honestly wasn't planning on buying this right away. But being over here, in the Army with nothing really to do except go to work, and pretend I'm not here, I picked it up. Well I really couldn't resist because William Shatner is my biggest hero, and I love the character of Denny Crane. Watching this season from the beginning to end I realized this show was a lot better than I had expected, in fact better than season three, which kind of left me wanting a little bit more. Season Four brings back a lot of characters and stories from past seasons, more so from season two; witch is my favorite season over all. I was going to give this set a four star, because a few of the episodes it was a little hard to suspend disbelief, like when Alan go to the U.S. Supreme Court, I find it hard to believe they wouldn't have shut Alan down when he just unloads on them. But I had to give it five stars, because even though some episodes are hard to believe, for the most part, it tries to be fair when it comes to both sides of the issues, more so than Fox news itself, which they even take shots at from time to time. That's cool for a show that's a Fox property. But more than that I found myself laughing so hard in some episodes, I completely forgot that I was in this bleak and desolate country and felt like I was back home in the states among friends. It is sad that this next season is going to be short and last season, which surprises me because of all the praise and awards this show, has received over the years. But that falls on the suits at ABC, which they also take a few potshots at towards the end of this season. So one can only hope when they get to the Finale, they end it with a BANG. So until next time... DENNY CRANE, OVER AND OUT.
Best Series on TV September 10, 2008 Gilsbebe (Florida) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I love this show and will be very sad to see it end this year. The relationship between Shatner and Spader is wonderful. My father was in big business and there are so many 'deja vu' moments during this show which makes it so real to me. I am in Orlando and my Aunt lived in Vancouver. We would both watch it and the following evening I would call her and we would talk about the show and laugh for hours. It was the best time of the week. I'll miss that but even more when the show is over. Shatner has proven that you can get away from a previous character (Star Trek) and be really damn funny. I look forward to watching it all over again in my 'older' age.
More Special Features, please ! September 26, 2008 747667 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Great series, but the DVD sets are notably short on special features. Maybe they are holding them for the end? When will we get to see the intro of the main characters (on The Practice)? Will be a long time, if ever, when that season of The Practice will come to DVD. Why not include them, or other special features, in the last box set? Maybe if we talk it up here, they will!!!
SUPERB AS USUAL! October 24, 2008 Robert Winstone (London, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's incredible to think that ABC want to axe this show. It is funny and thought provoking. Ok so some people who aren't quite up there in the brightness stakes might find it hard at time to comprehend but this series is just as good as the rest. Spader is his usual remarkable complicated self and Denny, well, it's been a long time since television writers and producers have managed to create such a character as Denny Crane. ABC should take another look at ceasing what is delightfully referred to in one of the US papers as "both lighthearted and funny but with wit and truth that could burn through a freezer'! Excellent again. If it aint broke, don't fix it! Please guys don't end this fabulous show.
